Christians believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who became man, born of a named Mary. He came as man to show mankind what God is like and what God wants from them and to restore the relationship between man and God. Therefore, Christians pray to him and worship him as God and live according to what he taught.
For the believer, the extraordinary event of the Resurrection confirms that Jesus Christ is truly divine (God). Jesus Christ is no longer confined to one place or time as he had been. during his earthly life as man. He is fully alive and active among his followers although he is not seen physically. He can now enter into a personal relationship and union with each of his followers, by giving them the Holy Spirit.
Christians believe that the One God is a community of three Divine Persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. This is called the Trinity.
God has created man in his own image and likeness. This means that man is able to think, choose and love and has an eternal soul. Man finds meaning in life only by knowing and worshipping God and by loving others. Therefore Jesus Christ gave his disciples these two main commandments: to love God with all their heart and mind and strength, and to love their neighbours as themselves.
However, as man is able to choose, there are times when he makes selfish choices, which hurt others and himself In doing so, he offends God and this is sin.
A Christian believes that sins can only be forgiven by God. When a person repents and asks God for forgiveness, that person is forgiven.
A Christian believes that he cannot lead a good Christian life by his own efforts. He has to believe in and depend completely on the power of the Holy Spirit (God) and this he does by constant communication with God through prayer. This is why prayer is important in a Christian's life.
God's plan is not simply to provide for individuals to get a passport to heaven. When a person becomes a Christian, he normally joins a Church or a community sharing the same faith. Fellowship with other Christians and praying together are necessary to help and support each other. The Church proclaims that its sacred book, the Bible, is the Living Word of God and offers it to every believer. Today, there are many denominations of Christians such as the Anglicans, Catholics, Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians, etc. All of them basically believe in Jesus Christ but there are different understandings and emphases in their teachings.
Christians believe in life after death. The life beyond the grave is believed to be much more free and full than that which can ever be found in this life. They believe that all people will be judged by God one day. They also believe that at the end of time when Jesus Christ returns they will receive the new Resurrection bodies and enter into eternal happiness.
