The President of the United States is often considered the most powerful person in the world. But just what does being President mean?
The presidency is a unique branch of the American Government. When the Founding Fathers met at the Constitutional Convention they had two fears about this branch of government. Too weak, and the lack of authority under the Articles of Confederation would be repeated; too strong, and it might lead to tyranny and an eventual return to monarchy. The framers were swayed by the thought that George Washington would be the first president because they trusted his judgement in shaping the executive branch. Thus, in the Constitution, they created an executive with definite and limited powers, while at the same time they left unsaid many details.
