George Washington

Washington became President to a young, new nation. The United States was moving from its status as a colony of Great Britain to that of a independent nation. The people saw Washington as a fitting leader for his service to them in combat against the British. The times called for a President who would not abuse his power, nor allow control to slip from his grasp.
