George Washington

Birth-Death: (1732 - 1799 ) Term: (1789-1797 )

George Washington believed that as President, it was his sole duty to enforce the laws and policies set by Congress. He did not exercise the same sort of power that modern Presidents do. However, Washington quickly accepted that as the head of the nation, foreign policy would fall on his shoulders. In his Farewell Address, Washington warned of the dangers of political parties and long-term alliances with foreign coutries.
