Foreign Events of John TylerTyler was a laid back president. The Concert of Europe ruled over Europe, and maintained a peaceful state. The United States, even though splitting from sectionalism, was peaceful and did not have many problems. Tyler ratified the Webster-Ashburton Treaty in 1842, which set up a clear Maine-Canada border. There had been disputes in that area, and the situation was a little tense during the following years. It was later referred to as the Aerostook war even though there were no casualties. The settlement was favorable to the United States, as it left the Mesabi iron deposits within the U.S. border. At the end of his presidency, after seeing James K. Polk win the next election on the issue of annexing Texas, Tyler put in legislation to do just that. Texas was officially annexed to the United States three days before Polk was inaugurated on March 1st. It became a state less than a year later on December 29th, 1846. |
