John Tyler

Birth-Death: (1790 - 1862 ) Term: (1841-1845 )

Tyler did not see the division of the country among sectional lines. After Congress passed a bill for a new bank of the United States, he failed to sign it, thus alienating members of his own party.

Domestic Events of John Tyler

The death of William Henry Harrison, and the ascension of John Tyler to the presidency, marked a defeat for the Whigs. Tyler was on the ticket to attract more voters; no one expected him to ever become president.

After Harrison's death Clay took the lead in advancing a new treasury program. He felt it necessary to establish a third bank of the United States, and he was able to pass the legislation through Congress. Tyler vetoed it and thus forced the immediate resignation of his whole cabinet, except for Daniel Webster who resigned after finishing the Webster-Ashburton treaty.
