Zachary Taylor

Zachary Taylor recognized the division of the nation between the North and the South. President Taylor decided to take direct action to solve the conflict over the expansion of slavery, which was one of the main causes of sectional tension. He called for New Mexico and California to draft Constitutions immediately asking for admittance into the Union as a state.

    After California was admitted as a free state to the United States, the slave-free balance in the Senate was disturbed, and as the debate about slavery in the newly acquired territories became more and more heated, a new compromise was being developed. The Compromise of 1850, or the Omnibus bill, as it was also known, passed after Taylor died in office.
