James Monroe

Birth-Death: (1758 - 1831 ) Term: (1817-1825 )

President Monroe began his administration with a goodwill tour, which heralded the arrival of what was coined the "Era of Good Feelings." Domestically, Monroe tried to keep things as quiet as possible, despite the growing sectional problems. Monroe's foreign policy was to recognize the independence of Latin American countries from Spain, and is now known as the Monroe Doctrine.
