Rutherford Birchard Hayes

Birth-Death: (1822 - 1893 ) Term: (1877-1881 )

President Rutherford Hayes brought new dignity to the office of President by advocating and practicing reform. Despite the opinions of his fellow party members, or those who felt they deserved to be rewarded, Hayes consistently based his political appointments upon merit. As a result, his Cabinet consisted of a group of men best suited for their respective positions, even if one was an ex-Confederate, and the other a Liberal Republican.
