Domestic Events of Ulysses GrantEven though great technological breakthroughs occurred during Grant's administration, it is most remembered for the many scandals. Grant's cabinet consisted of his old friends, the Ohio Gang, many of which took advantage of their high posts and used them for personal profit. The Grant presidency also marked a point of the first major financial depression since the 1840s. The panic of 1873 swept through the nation, and as a result, the Bill of '73 was passed. This bill changed the financial system of the United States. No longer could silver be coined into currency. |
