Foreign Events of Gerald FordIn November of 1974 President Ford met with the the leader of the USSR, Leonid Brezhnev at Vladivostok, a health resort in Eastern Russia. They reached tentative agreements, limiting the number of Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs), missiles launched from submarines, multiple war heads (MIRVs) and bombers. Although both nations had to build more to reach the numbers established, the agreement showed that Ford was following a policy of detente: the United States and the USSR would seek agreements to prevent a nuclear war. From Vladivostok, Ford made a one day stop in Seoul, South Korea, to remind the North Koreans that the United States was still a friend of the Southern Koreans, and would aid them if necessary. |
