Gerald Rudolph Ford

Birth-Death: (1913 -     ) Term: (1974-1977 )

Gerald R. Ford became the first non-elected President. He had been appointed Vice President under the Nixon administration, and when, in 1974, Nixon resigned, Ford took office. Since Ford was not elected he had less prestige in Congress. However, he still managed to pass bills reforming Federal Campaign financing, improving freight service in the northeastern United States, and reforming the seniority system in Congress. At the same time he met with the Russian Premier, and made a visit to Japan to discuss US-Japanese relations.
