Foreign Events of Bill Clinton

Terrorist activities in the United States became a prominent issue during Clinton's administration. In February 1993, the World Trade Center was bombed, resulting in the most destructive terrorist attack in U.S. history.

1993 also marked the beginning of the President's attempts to stop nuclear testing around the world. By stating that the United States would not conduct a test unless another nation does so first, Clinton not only lessened concerns of nuclear weapons activity in the U.S., but was able to ask Ukraine and North Korea to abandon their nuclear activity.

During Clinton's administration, a number of international trade agreements were reached. One agreement with Japan called for the lowering of tariffs to reduce consumer prices and increase the global living standard. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was designed to encourage export to Mexico, which would create export-related jobs in the U.S.

The United States served as a host for peace talks on a neutral ground between the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Chariman Yasir Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin. Following a peaceful agreement between the PLO and Israel, King Hussein of Jordan initated peace negotiations with Israel.

Conflict in Bosnia was increasing with terrorist and guerilla warfare, and accusations of genocide against the Serbian military forces. Multiple attempts at mediation resulted in a plan to split Bosnia into three ethnic states governed by a weak central government. Sarajevo, Bosnia's capital, was temporarily placed under U.S. control.
