Grover Cleveland

Birth-Death: (1837 - 1908 ) Term: (1885-1889, 1893-1897 )

President Cleveland did not believe any particular economic group should be given special benefits. "Federal aid," he said, "in such cases encourages the expectation of paternal care on the part of the government and weakens the sturdiness of our national character. . . ." Thus, when bills came across his desk benfiting special groups, he quickly vetoed them.
