George Herbert Walker Bush

Birth-Death: (1924 -     ) Term: (1989-1993 )

The end of the Cold War and the break-up of the Soviet Union were but two of the major changes around the world. The Berlin Wall came down, reuniting two sides of the same nation for the first time in fourty years. In the United States, things were not proceeding as well, however. The economy was worsening, violent crime increasing, and the deficit increasing.

Major Events with George Bush

1990-1991 - Desert Shield and Desert Storm

In August 1990 Iraq invaded and occupied neighboring Kuwait. Hussein sought to elevate himself to leadership of the OPEC world and also cancel his multibillion dollar debt to Kuwait. World reaction was quick. The UN Security Council passed Resolution 660 calling for immediate and unconditional Iraqi withdrawal. This was Bush's finest hour; he led a worldwide UN-approved trade embargo against Iraq, then he increased the concentration of US troops in the region to 500,000 within a few months. This was operation Desert Shield. After Iraq ignored the UN ultimatum, the UN, led by the United States, launched a full scale air assault against Iraq. 100 hours after the ground war started it was over and Kuwait was free from aggression.

1991 - End of the Cold War

The Cold War officially ended when the Soviet Union divided itself into 15 independent republics in December of 1991. Boris Yeltsin became the leader of the newly-formed Russia, still spanning much of the territory of the old USSR. The major problem that remained was the control and disposal of nuclear weapons, especially in the republics other than Russia.

1991 - Los Angeles Riots

Race relations continued to be an integral part of the United States culture during the 1990s. In 1991 Los Angeles police officers arrested Rodney King after a high speed car chase. An amateur tape showed the four officers brutally beating King after the arrest. The first jury proclaimed that the officers were innocent and riots broke out throughout the nation. The city hit worst was Los Angeles where damages reached into millions of dollars. A second trial convicted two of the officers but sentenced them to only two and a half years, well below the ten year maximum.
