Chester Alan Arthur

Birth-Death: (1830 - 1886 ) Term: (1881-1885 )

Arthur originally entered his office as Vice President a strong believer in the Spoils System, where elected officials rewarded those who had provided support with political favors. However, after Garfield's death, President Arthur became an advocate of civil service reform.

Domestic Events of Chester Arthur

    The assasination of President Garfield shocked the nation. Even though the in was mentaly unstable, the motive for the killing was a result of the spoils system. President Arthur changed from a stalwart to a half-breed due to the assass,ination and during his term in office he passed the Pendelton Act which advocated a merit system for the selection of public employees.
