John Adams

Birth-Death: (1735 - 1826 ) Term: (1797-1801 )

One reason John Adams favored a policy of neutrality was because of Washington's farewell address, in which he stated it would be in the best interests for the United States to avoid European affairs. Adams realized that the United States was still a growing nation, and would need time to mature before being able to step out into the rest of the world. Continuing a policy of neutrality helped to make sure the United States would exist in the future.
