2.2 Complementary and Supplementary Angles
Definition-Complementry angles are two angles whose sum is 90° (a right angle).
Each of the two angles is called the complement of the other.
Definition-Supplementry angles are two angles whose sum is 180° (a straight angle).
Each of the two angles is called the supplement of the other.
Example:
1. One of two complementary angles is three more than the twice the other. Find the measure of each.
Answer: Let x = measure of smaller angle
2x + 3 = measure of larger angle
x + 2x + 3 = 90
3x + 3 = 90
3x = 87
x = 29
2x + 3 = 61
The measures of the two angles are 29 and 61.
