
There are 11 major ports and 139 operable minor ports located along the 5,560 kms long coastline of India. During 1994-95, the total cargo handled at these major ports was 197.3 million tons, representing 92% of the total traffic handled by the port sector and amounting to a growth of 10% over 1993-94. Dry and liquid bulk made up 80% of the port traffic in volume. The traffic moving through major ports is targeted to reach 230 million tons by end 1996-97. On the supply side, the 8th Plan envisages increase in port capacity from 185 million tons in 1993-94, to 250 million tons in end 1996-97.
