The power generation in 1994-95, at 351.02 billion kwh, recorded a growth of 8.5% over 1993-94 but fell short of the year's target by 0.3%.
8th Plan Outlay for Power Sector
The proposed public sector outlay on power for the 8th plan is for Rs 795.89 billion, which will add 30,538 MW only.
Installed Capacity
India's installed power generation capacity rose to 81,164 MW by March 31, 1995 and is estimated to go upto 2,30,000 MW by 2010.
Plant Load Factor (PLF)
The PLF is an important indicator of operational efficiency of thermal power plants. The annual PLF of thermal plants, which was 60% in 1994-95, is targeted to rise to 70% by 2010.

Power generation increased at the rate of 9.1% per annum during the eighties. This growth rate declined to 7.3% during the early nineties to 1994-95 due to a slowdown in setting up of additional power generating capacity. The per capita consumption of power has increased from 16 KWH, in the fifties to 283 KWH in 1992-93. However, there is a considerable inter-state variation in the per capita consumption of power. Total power consumption in the country, including consumption by non-utilities, was 263.1 billion during 1993-94.
The distribution of power consumption among various sectors during 1993-94 is as under:
The production of power is distributed amongst various categories as under :
The Union Power Ministry has made amendments in its scheme to encourage private participation in electricity generation, supply and distribution.
