Two-thirds of India's crude oil production is from the Bombay High region.
Annual crude oil production, reached its peak level in 1989-90. The decline
in crude oil production since 1990-91 has resulted in higher imports. However,
with the arrest of the declining trend in production in 1993-94, imports
of crude oil have also reduced.
India's refining capacity remained at 51.85 million tones between 1988-89 and 1992-93. During the next two years, a refining capacity of 4.55 million tons was added. Production of petroleum products increased at 3.5% per annum during the seventies. During the eighties, this growth doubled to 7.2%. Consumption of petroleum products increased at a rate of 6% per annum during the eighties. This growth declined to 3% during 1990-91 to 1993-94 as a result of a slowdown in industrial activity.
