..Manipulating
your print can sometimes add a special touch of
creativity. Sepia toning and Sabattier are two
effects that we will discuss.
Sepia
Toning - When you take an image
and print it (in black and white) you are stuck with
only black, white, and an array of grays. Sepia
toning allows the photographer to create the effect
of color. Usually only one color can be added (blue,
brown, green) to create the effect of a colored
image. An example would be if you took a picture of
the ocean. You can take that picture and do a blue
sepia tone on it. This will make the water look blue.
Sepia
toning works by first bleaching the image. This
whitens all dark areas of the image. Then the toner
solution is added, and those bleached areas are
replaced by the tone. The darker the area was before
it was bleached, the darker the tone will be.
Sabattier
Effect - This effect creates a
flat image with dramatic tracing around certain
shades of gray. We say certain because depending on
how long you develop the print for before re-exposing
it to light, determines which shades are highlighted.
Below we show the normal print, the test print, and
the final effect print.
