Holland is a land of much water. A big reason is that a larg part of Holland lays under sea level. If ever the dike's will break only the East and Southeast will stay dry. Many tourist become afraid when they land at the biggest Airport of Holland, Schiphol, and hear they are walking under sea level. In the history it many times happened that a part of Holland was flooded, but it never happened that all of the lower land came under water. It happened many times that the Dutch people fought against the water. There are many places in Holland which had been a lake. In 1933 a part of the sea became a lake. The intention was to make it all land but only a part has become land. Twenty years later there was a very big disaster, a flood which killed more then 1800 people. After that flood, people started with a very big project to stop floods in future called "the Deltaworks". We have made a special page about that. Holland has used the water many times. Holland is dependent on the water, but not as much as in early times. In early times, when there where no cars or planes, ships where the best way to transport goods.
