The music of Central and South America and the Caribbean has its roots in the Inca, Aztec, Mayan and island cultures that flourished before the arrival of Europeans. The Mayans developed trumpets and flutes, including the ocarina, a wind instrument made of clay.

The Spanish and Portuguese brought their culture to these countries. And when slaves arrived in the Caribbean and on the continent, the added an African flavor to the music. This blending has created the sounds that are distinctively "Latin" or "Caribbean."

Brazil, Cuba and Jamaica have exported their music to Europe and America. The upbeat rhythms of Cuban and Brazilian music are enjoyed by dancers everywhere. And when Caribbean music is mentioned, Americans think of steel drums and reggae, the Jamaican music made popular worldwide by Bob Marley.
