The music of the Middle East is rhythmic and expressive. It uses distinctive instruments--the al ud, a four-stringed lute; the tablah, a skin of fish or goat stretched across a ceramic vase and the qanun, an 81-string harp.

The ancient cultures of the area developed a six-holed flute called a nay and many of the basic instruments that are common to modern music.
