United Kingdom is a blend of rocky highlands and fertile lowlands. It also consists of Northern Ireland, many islands off the shore of Britain, Gibraltar at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea, the Caribbean Islands of Berumuda, Cayman, Turks and Caicos, the British Islands, Montserrat as well as the Falklands in the South Atlantic and Pitcairn Island in the South Pacific.

Much of American music is rooted in the British tradition that came with the colonists--dances, hymns and musical instruments came on the same boats that brought the immigrants to the new nation. Yet in the 20th Century, the British injected a new energy and style into American music when the "British Invasion" occurred. In the mid-1960, many rock groups from England became popular in America--the most famous being the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. These bands were working class groups who shared experiences common with youth in the United States. Other names from the period were Lulu, Herman's Hermits, the Dave Clark Five, Petula Clark, Jerry and the Pacemakers and Peter and Gordon. These are only a handful of the British groups that had success on American soil in the 1960s.
