Early History

Alaska's earliest women were the Natives and the Russians.

Picture of Whale The native women lived very differently than we do today. However some things are similar to our lives today. They were involved in keeping a home, taking care of their families, and living their lives in their place in history.

The Russians originally came to discover if there was a land link between Russia and the new land. They never found a land link, but what they did find was far more valuable to them than they could have imagined - furs, and lots of them. At that time rich furs would bring a high price. In their excitement they hunted several species of animals almost to extinction.
