The Woman & the Dog

One year in the village food was scare. All of the meat and fish was gone. The village hunters went out every day in search of food, but there was none to be found. Everyone began packing up the camp to move to the winter village. Among the starving villagers there lived a man and his young wife. The young man was a very jealous man, and he did not trust his wife. He was planning to leave her behind. So when the last villager left he went around and put snow on the hot coals that were left. So that with no food, no fire, and no warm clothes, his young wife would die.

Fortunately after the young man had left an old woman told the young wife where all of the hot coals were hidden. After the old woman had left all that the young woman had left was an old dog, left behind by it's master. She quickly looked for the coals. When she found them she put dry twigs on them to make a fire. She had one going in no time.

That night she noticed that there were wild rabbits living nearby. She went around to the various abandoned camp sites gathering sinew. She took the sinew and made it into snares to catch the rabbits with. Once she had caught several rabbits she sewed a outfit of rabbit fur for herself. She cooked the meat and ate it, giving some to the old dog.

That night she stayed up to keep the fire going and stay warm. A voice spoke to her while she was tending the fire. It was the voice of a man. The next morning she noticed that the old dog was gone, he had turned himself into a young man to help the young woman.

Together they built the woman a house to live in. He would hunt for food which she would cook. She would take the skins of the animals that he killed and make clothes for the two of them.

Meanwhile the rest of the tribe at the winter village was still starving, they decided to go back to their summer village. When they reached the village the young woman heard them coming. She invited them in. She gave them food and warmth. She noticed that her husband was not with them. She went out looking for him. When she found him she asked him to come back with her. She gave him food and furs. She had saved his life even after he had left her to die.

He promised her that he would never be jealous or unkind again, and that he would always help people who needed him.
