Space shuttles are space crafts that can be re-used. They take-off like a rocket, orbit the Earth like a spacecraft and land like a plane. The USA first designed the shuttle as a cheaper way of getting into space. The shuttle was designed so it could be re-used, unlike the conventional "throwaway" rocket.
