ATMOSPHERE

BACK

Jupiter's atmosphere is characterized by colorful swirling clouds that cover the planet completely. These clouds form in Jupiter's troposphere. The lower clouds, like those on the Earth, are thought to be composed of water droplets with ice crystals being present at higher altitudes. The higher clouds are composed of ammonium hydrosulfide. In the Jovian atmosphere or between troposphere and stratosphere, the temperature can drop down to 150° F. In the inosphere, however, temperature increases again.
