GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Saturn is the sixth planet outward from the sun. The Greeks named it after the god Cronus, whose Roman equivalent was Saturn. It is the second largest planet but appears to be much fainter than Jupiter because it orbits nearly twice as far away from the sun. Saturn has a gaseous body that is surrounded by many rings. In the new nomenclature of Saturn's ring system, the thousands of now known rings and ringlets are divided into seven main rings based on the older nomenclature. Saturn appears to the naked eye as a very slow-moving, pale yellow star. To complete its orbit, the planet takes nearly 30 earth years. Saturn has the least density of all the planets. The average relative density has been calculated to be only about 0.69, meaning it could float in water. |
