Carbon Jargon:
- depolymerization -- breaking down a polymer, or complex
structure (protein), into its monomers, or single parts (amino acids)
- enzyme -- protein which accelerates chemical reactions in the
cell
- fermentation -- process by which microorganisms produce enzymes
to degrade (break-down) proteins
- pepsinogen -- inactive chemical found inside the stomach glands
which keeps the stomach glands (which are made of protein) from digesting
themselves
- regurgitation -- bringing already swallowed, partially digested
food back up in order to rechew it
- remastication -- rechewing the feed after it has been
regurgitated in order to squeeze liquid out and increase surface area
for digestion; "chewing the cud"
- ruminary -- type of animal which cannot digest cellulose and,
therefore, possesses additional stomach chambers, one of which is heavily
fortified with cellulose-digesting bacteria and protozoa; such animals
regurgitate and remasticate their food
