Dear Christy,

Happy birthday sis! I hope you’ve had a great day! I’ve been spending the last few days on a grocery store shelf. We arrived on yet another truck a couple of days ago at a grocery store in Raleigh, North Carolina. Soon, we were unpacked and put on the shelf. I was lucky to be on the front row, so I could see what was going on. I’d been waiting for at least two days, and nobody picked me up. All of the children passed by our box because we’re not a sugar cereal. Some of the adults bought the other boxes, but no one picked me. Finally this morning, a young man picked up my box. He looks like an athlete and seems very nice. We got to ride in his grocery cart all around the store. After he paid for me and the other groceries, we got to ride home in his car. I’m not sure what he’ll do with us tomorrow. Well, happy birthday again! I hope to see you soon! Tell the rest of the family hello for me.

Love,

Captain Carbon

Dear Cousin Cornelius,

How are things in the diamond world? Well, although my life is less glamorous, it couldn’t be less exciting. Today, I started out in a box of breakfast cereal. Early this morning, the young man who bought us a few days ago opened our box of WheatUp. It was the first time I’d seen the light of day since I was packaged in Illinois about a week ago. He poured me and some other flakes into a bowl. Then, he poured milk over us. The next thing I knew he was lifting me up to his mouth. I was very scared because his teeth looked very sharp. It didn’t hurt very much when he chewed my flake, though. Now, I’m on my way to his stomach. Who knows what will happen there! Well, happy Fourth of July! Don’t break too many hearts!

Love,

Captain Carbon
