Potassium

Potassium is a mineral whose primary function is in the regulation of fluids and electrolyte levels in the body. It also is important for the transmission of nerve impulses and the release of energy from carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.
Potassium is found in most foods, as it is an essential component of all living cells. The richest sources of protein include unprocessed foods like raw fruits and vegetables and fresh meats. Milk is another excellent source of potassium.
Although potassium deficiency is rare, signs include an abnormal heart rhythm, weakness, and heart and lung failure. Deficiency usually occurs from taking diuretics and purgatives, which flush potassium from the system.
