After 6 months of age, our body is capable of producing all the cholesterol we need; yet we consume over 600mg a day of it, raising cholesterol levels in our bloodstream. Cholesterol is found in animal products such as meats, eggs, and butter. LDLs (low-density lipoproteins), or "Bad cholesterol", contributes to the buildup of gunk lining our blood vessels and clogging our arteries, while HDLs (high-density lipoproteins), or "Good cholesterol", on the other hand, protects against the buildup of cholesterol on artery walls. It also is important in the formation of cell membranes, certain hormones, bile, and also facilitates Vitamin D in our system.
