Caffeine is a mild stimulant found in most drinks.
Caffeine has been shown to make people feel happier and more productive,
and is perhaps the most commonly used drug in America. Because of this,
it has also been studied extensively, and has been shown to pose a few
adverse side effects:
- In one study, some test subjects reported problems getting enough
sleep and problems getting up as easily in the morning.
- Caffeine has been shown to encourage your system to flush many
important nutrients from your bloodstream, most notably calcium.
However, Caffeine has these positive side effects:
- Caffeine accelerates your metabolism, your heartbeat, and your
respiration, giving you a "lift" feeling that keeps you from feeling
tired and drowsy.
- In a major study, it was found that fewer suicides occurred from coffee
drinkers than those who stayed away from coffee.
- Reaction time to sound and visual cues can improve.
Most studies have shown 200mg a day is generally the safest amount to
consume consistently.
Caffeine is found most commonly in these foods:
- Coffee. Regular coffee contains approximate 120mg of caffeine.
- Tea. Tea can have as much as 70mg of caffeine.
- Soda. Most colas (JOLT COLA in particular) contain anywhere from 40 to 72mg of caffeine.
- Chocolate. One ounce of chocolate has about 10mg of caffeine.
