Staying Active

One thing you should always remind yourself of is the new healthy way you
are living your life. Within weeks of continuous exercise, you will start
noticing your increasing energy level, your improved appearance and social
interactions. There are psychological benefits as well: increased self-esteem
and confidence, as well as relief from depression, anxiety and stress. This is a pay-off
in itself!
If you are serious about your health and well-being, you will take action
and start an exercise program. And once you see the benefits it results in,
you will definitely appreciate all the work you did for yourself! It is
worth sticking to.
For the best long-term results, try to make it fun for yourself; set goals
and add variety. When your exercises are fun and pose a constant challenge
to you, your exercise program will never get old and boring.
Here are a few tips on how to achieve that:
Setting Goals
- Goals give you direction as well as clarity of what you are trying to
achieve. In other words, a vague goal, such as "I want to be fit",
gives you nothing to shoot for. If you set a particular goal, however,
such as "I want to lose 10 pounds", it automatically gives you a sense
of direction. You immediately know that it will take you about five
weeks to achieve that.
- Be realistic in your goal setting. Know your limits and be patient.
Don't set your expectations too high -- you will most likely get
frustrated and quit. On the other hand, if your goals are too easy,
you will more likely lose interest. Make them a constant challenge.
Motivation will come from your pride and satisfaction in achieving
them.
Making It Fun
- Make your workouts something to look forward to. Add variety. If you
are a weight lifter, change the amount of your reps as well as your
sets frequently. If running is your passion, change the surfaces and
terrain you run on. If you have a general fitness program, add as
many different activities as possible. Be creative!
- Exercise with a family member or a friend. It will not only make your
sessions more interesting, but will also increase your likelihood of
showing up at the gym. Choose a partner that has similar fitness goals
and interests, and who is willing to motivate and support you.
- Make workouts a part of your day. Scheduling them on the same days and
times will become a fixture in your life, not a whim. Not going to the
gym will feel unnatural.
When you begin achieving satisfying results, the effort you make will be
worth the excitement and fun you will experience. Remember, action creates
motivation. As the Nike logo says - "Just Do It.®"
