Functions of Nutrition

The primary function of food is to provide us with energy. This energy is carried within the molecules of three basic nutrients: carbs, fats and protein. They are called macronutrients. As soon as our bodies break them down, the energy is released. This energy is used for our daily activities, including exercise. The excess amounts of energy is stored as fat for later use.

Food also gives us water and essential vitamins and minerals, which are called micronutrients. Vitamins are organic substances needed for many bodily processes. Minerals are metallic elements needed for metabolism ( the rate at which the body burns calories). Water is essential to sustain life. It is used in virtually all of the body's functions.
