Cycling Toward Success Logo

Old Race photo courtessy of menotony vintage cyclesWhat does it mean to push your foot against that pedal as untold masses do the same; all are hoping for the same glory, and the feeling of the ribbon break across their body. Any one of these people eagarly straining against inertia could steal your dream, but yet you all share in the feeling of mounting excitement as the speed and tension builds.

It means you are riding in a bicycle race. Perhaps it is just a small race race or maybe a large national event. Nevertheless, the feeling is great and it is what keeps veteran racers comeing back for more, and beginners chomping at their bits...

Major International races like the Tour De France are not open to everyone. Other regional races, however are open to the greenest beginner. To evaluate yourself, and see if you are ready for the next race, try riding as far as you can in a hour. Who knows, you could set a record some day.

The record has been set 32 times since the 1800's. It is now held by Tomy Rominger, who rode 35km (thats 21 mies in one hour). Good luck!

Regardless of your record-setting ability, a race can be a great way to show your potential and motivate performance. Yahoo has a great index of local rides. Check 'em out

The internet is a great place to find otrhers interested in racing. Not only are there innumerable bicycle magazines, but major international races have web sites too. You can check out some of those on our links page, under the heading racing. Or you can just click here to check them out.
