The Earth is like a huge natural Greenhouse that traps heat. And we need the heat in order to survive. Below, is a step-by-step guide to the process of the all-important Greenhouse Effect.

A): Sunlight radiates from the sun, through space, to earth's atmosphere.
B): The sunlight enters the atmosphere and hits the earth. Some of it turns to heat energy in the form of infrared light. The heat gets absorbed by surrounding air and land, which, in turn, makes the earth surface warm.
C): As the earth's surface gets warmed up, it in turn radiates heat back towards space. Some of these heats passes directly into space.
D): When the heat tries to leave the atmosphere, some of it gets absorbed by the greenhouse gases and is reradiated back to the earth. The heat then gets trapped in the atmosphere, thus warming the earth's surface.
