Suggestions for Solutions

This was to generate ideas and solutions on how to recognize a fad diet when we see one, and thus be able to avoid falling into the trap of fad dieting.

  • I think that just knowing what they are, the basis they are built upon, or simply their definition, is not enough. After understanding what a fad diet is, we have to learn how to recognize them, by applying our knowledge to various diets and come up with our own conclusions. An example would be to observe common trends in fad diets, and afterwards, refer back to these trends when analysing a diet.

  • Yes! Health is much better than short-term temporary results. With a healthy lifestyle, the results you see will be more satisfying, and their effects will be long term. This means that you get to enjoy the fruits of your labour! (: For more details on healthy lifestyles, you can check out credible online sources, such as government nutrition websites.

  • Another way to prevent ourselves from fad dieting, is to not bother trying them out at all. Instead, the focus should be on living a healthy lifestyle. We should try to understand more about the food pyramid and think of ways to incorporate it into our daily life. A healthy lifestyle does not just constitute one’s food intake, but also involves regular exercise. This would lead to a gradual loss of weight, but instead of being “skinny”, you would be healthy.

  • I think that questioning is very helpful! However, the analysis will be less reliable if you jump to conclusions while questioning the diet. No assumptions should be made. Everything should be based on actual facts and information, collected from a reliable and trustworthy source. Therefore, do not jump to conclusions.

  • I agree with what you said. However, the number of questions we can use to question the nature of these diets are numerous. They don’t have to be limited to just the above listed questions. With your own research, you will be able to find many scientifically supported food facts that can be used to verify the nature of these fad diets. Remember, do not go on a diet until you are entirely sure that it’s healthy, does not deprive you of essential nutrients and will not be detrimental to your general well-being! Hence, make sure you come to a solid conclusion first, by questioning the diet.

In Conclusion...

Therefore, we have come up with a few steps to prevent the masses from getting duped by fad diets.

Step 1: Know what they are - Do some basic research to know what exactly a fad diet is. This includes trends in fad diets.

Step 2 : Question - Apply your knowledge to diets you come across in your daily life by asking questions based on the information you know.

Step 3: Conclude - make sure you come to a logical conclusion on the nature of the diet, without making any assumptions.

Step 4: Share the information - tell your friends and your family about fad diets, warn them of their detrimental effects, and teach them how to analyse the nature of diets too!

However, a much easier alternative is to just lead a healthy lifestyle!
