Fad or Healthy?

This debate was done as a group activity during our meeting. Peiyi was asked to be in support of fad diets, and Christine was the opposing party. The rest were to add on whenever necessary. This was to try out different perspectives, to ensure that our research was not prejudiced against fad diets.

  • For Fad Diets

The results of fad-dieting are easily achievable within a short period of time. Exercise is not required and only restriction of diet is required.

I believe that it is especially important that fad dieting is effective within a short period of time as more and more people lead busy cosmopolitan lives, juggling between their studies, careers and family with the advancement of the world. As a result, they cannot afford to spend any time on exercise. Therefore, I think that fad dieting would be the most convenient method of weight loss for city dwellers.

  • For Healthy Diets

I think many people are tempted to try out Fad diets as they may guarantee quick weight loss results, for example a reduction of 3 to 5 kilograms in weight over a period of a week. Like you mentioned, I often see advertisements splashed over magazines celebrities promoting fad diets, piqueing my curiosity. However, based on personal experience and research, these results are often exaggerated and based on limited resources and studies. Hence, fad diets are not credible in portraying the effectiveness of them. I’d tried out some of these diets before, and the results were negligible! Just because celebrities do so doesn’t mean we have to follow suit!

  • For Fad Diets

I think that fad-dieting is actually widely recognized to be a good method to lose weight rapidly. For example, famous public figures like Al Gore and Bill Clinton have tried the Atkins diet before while the famous celebrity Beyonce has attempted the Maple Syrup Diet. Most of the results proved to be positive.

Fad diets overemphasize on the results of weight loss and change in appearance, hence fad diets have changed the definition of ‘healthy’ from being the general condition of one’s body and health to the outward appearance of a person.
