Types of Fad Diets

  • 1.
    Controlled Carbohydrates
Diets that believe in the controlled consumption of carbohydrates claim that a drastic reduction in the amount of carbohydrates in one’s daily diet is essential in weight loss. A low carbohydrate diet restricts fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes and dairy products.
  • 2.
    High Carbohydrates and Low Fat
High carbohydrates and low fat diets are the opposite of controlled carbohydrates diets. They usually emphasise the importance of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, and refined grain food (carbohydrates). At the same time, these diets recommend very low quantities of fat of any type to be consumed.
  • 3.
    Magic Food
These diets claim that the consumption a large quantity of a specific food (the "magic food") will result in quick weight loss.
  • 4.
    Liquid Diet
In this type of diet, meals and solid food are replaced with special weight loss shakes. They are usually pre-packaged and sold in a powder form.
  • 5.
    High Protein Diet
This type of diet encourages the consumption of poultry, eggs and other protein-rich foods, usually at the expense of other food groups (for example, grains and/or vegetables).
