Obesity Weight Awareness Project (OWAP)
In this project the students will research information, brainstorm ideas and develop a plan to help fight obesity in children. The students will find out causes of childhood obesity then determine which they believe are the most problematic. They will develop some ideas to help children to be more aware of those causes and ways they can live a healthier lifestyle. The students will create a logo to represent their team. They will use the Internet to research information, the project pages in ThinkQuest to find instructions and develop their plan, and the interactive tools in ThinkQuest to create and share their project. The team may use a digital camera, video camera, scanner, and variety of software to complete the project. The student work will be evaluated by the coaches by checking artifacts to make sure students are focused to the task, documenting work and resources, and using appropriate language, grammar, photos, graphics, ThinkQuest tools, resources, and digital media to accomplish the finished product. The students will gain knowledge about childhood obesity—what causes it, its short-term/long-term affects, and possible solutions; enhance their research, language arts, reading, writing, organization, critical thinking, technology, self-direction, collaboration, communication, and creativity skills.
