Acne

To some degree, acne is unavoidable during adolescence. Acne is the result of the acceleration in the production of hormones, androgens, that occurs in puberty. Acne is the clogging of the pores in the skin. A pimple forms when bacteria get into the clogged pore and fills the space with pus. Studies have failed to find any connection between acne and foods such as chocolate, cola, nuts, pizza, or french fries--foods which are oily and thought to be the cause of acne among many people. However, as these foods are not scientifically linked to cause acne, they may aggravate acne, so therefore elimination of their presence from the diet may be beneficial.

A form of Vitamin A, (Retinoic acid) is sometimes prescribed for the topical treatment of more difficult cases of acne. This does not mean the ingestion of large amounts of this vitamin as a supplement will clear the skin. In fact, large doses of fat- soluble vitamins can be toxic.
