Alcohol & Health
Alcohol has plenty of calories, but no nutrients. It depresses
the appetite, and it takes money that may otherwise have been used
for food. Moreover, the steady use of alcohol has a toxic effect on
the lining of the intestines, and this can harm the absorption of
nutrients. Many teens incorrectly believe that beer drinkers do not
become alcoholics because there is so little alcohol in beer, as
compared to hard liquor. However, addiction is caused not by the
amount of alcohol ingested, but the fact that alcohol is being
ingested at all, regardless of quantity. And many teens also believe
alcohol to be nutritious. Although beer does have some niacin and
some protein, in order to meet the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance)
for niacin, a six-pack of beers would have to be ingested, and for
the RDA of protein to be met, one would have to ingest NINE six-packs
of beers. Thus, is can be concluded: drinking is not beneficial
to health, in fact it is very harmful.
