Smoking Diseases

Problems caused by smoking include chronic bronchitis and pulmonary emphysema, in addition to lung cancer. Bronchitis is a condition in which the bronchi are irritated. As cilia become useless, tar from cigarette smoke builds up, which results in chronic coughing and excessive mucous secretion of the bronchial tree. Emphysema, on the other hand is the destruction of the lung's air sacs. It requires more effort to breathe with emphysema. One puff of air will bring in less and less oxygen as emphysema develops. Lung cancer develops within the lung and moves on to other organs through the lymphatic system.
