What actually counts as a serving?
In the Bread, Cereal, Rice and Pasta Group, one slice of bread is considered a
serving, as is one ounce of ready-to-eat cereal or
one-half cup cooked cereal, rice, or pasta.
For vegetables, one cup of raw leafy greens, three/quarters cup vegetable
juice, or half a cup of chopped vegetables constitutes a serving.
For fruits, one whole apple, banana, or orange would count as a serving.
One wedge of melon, three quarters cup of fruit juice, or one half cup of
chopped fruits or berries.
For the milk group, a serving is one cup of milk or yogurt or one and one
half ounces of cheese.
For meats, a serving is two to three ounces of cooked, lean meat, poultry,
or fish. One egg is also a serving, as is one-half cup cooked beans, or two
tablespoons of seeds and nuts.
