What actually counts as a serving?

  • In the Bread, Cereal, Rice and Pasta Group, one slice of bread is considered a serving, as is one ounce of ready-to-eat cereal or one-half cup cooked cereal, rice, or pasta.
  • For vegetables, one cup of raw leafy greens, three/quarters cup vegetable juice, or half a cup of chopped vegetables constitutes a serving.
  • For fruits, one whole apple, banana, or orange would count as a serving. One wedge of melon, three quarters cup of fruit juice, or one half cup of chopped fruits or berries.
  • For the milk group, a serving is one cup of milk or yogurt or one and one half ounces of cheese.
  • For meats, a serving is two to three ounces of cooked, lean meat, poultry, or fish. One egg is also a serving, as is one-half cup cooked beans, or two tablespoons of seeds and nuts.

  • What do vitamins and minerals do for my body? And where can I find these nutrients?
