Durham Boats

Pictured here is a recreation of a Durham Boat. A Durham Boat is a large, flat bottom boat that was originally used to carry iron ore down the river. They were all about 30 to 60 feet long. George Washington and his men used these boats to cross the Delaware River on Christmas night. They then attacked the Hessians in the Battle of Trenton. The boats carried 40 soldiers including an eight man crew. The 150 to 200 horses and 18 guns were moved by a ferry boat. About 2400 men crossed the river that night.
